New Years Resolutions

New Year is a time to take stock and reflect on our lives, our achievements our failures and set ourselves goals for the future.  improvement missions.

Here are some of the most common New Years Resolutions:-

Lose Weight

Most people overindulge during the festive period and want to lose a few of those extra inches in the New Year. Gym subscriptions and sales of lycra soar, people start bringing cut-up pieces of fruit into work and taking the stairs, but the dark nights and cold weather naturally make us want to stay snug in our own little cubby-holes that we call home.

Most diets fail, as they are too difficult to stick to and people new to gyms need to take it steady and build their strength up. It’s proven that if you have friends to support you, by way of a gym buddy or by attending a slimming club, your chances of success are greater, as are your chances of maintaining your weight.

So try and encourage a friend to join you on your mission and your chances of success will be multiplied.

Stop Smoking

We all know the dangers of smoking, not to mention the financial burden, with ever increasing taxes and our disposable income is undoubtedly affected by this depressing recession.

But there is support out there, whether it be patches, tablets or just moral support. You can receive help through your GP – see http://tinyurl.com/6twdzac

Cut down on alcohol

Many of us enjoy a drink now and again, but without wanting to be preachy, the recommended units for men is 3-4 units per

Spend More Time with Family & Friends
day and for women it’s 2-3 units. One pint of lager = 3 units and a large glass of wine = 3 units. So all I’m saying is don’t overdo it.

It’s a fact that us Britons work the longest hours in Europe – groan! It’s easy to neglect our friends and family when we bring work home with us. So try an limit your time spent working from home, disconnect your smartphone from your emails, keep a diary and make time for friends and family and stick to it.

Get out of Debt
If your debts are becoming unmanageable then please don’t get yourself down. You can get help to tackle these problems. The Citizens Advice Bureau is a good place to start – offering free advice and support.
Learn Something New
I recall travelling a few years ago and stayed at a ‘homestay’, where the host would allow you to stay for free if you could do something useful such as cook, joinery anything like that. It really knocked me, when I realised that I didn’t really have any useful practical skills. I did manage to rescue a book that he had been writing as he had lost it on his computer – I guess that’s one of my skills and quite useful too. But learning something new is a great way to increase your confidence, meet new people and change your career or learn a fulfilling or practical hobby.

Volunteer
The Big Society that we hear about so often on the news relies very much on volunteers. Without wanting to be too depressing, unemployment has increased, but this can also be a huge opportunity to change career, spend more time with family and friends, concentrate on our hobbies, make new friends and volunteer. Volunteering opportunities are plentiful as cash-strapped charities don’t have the resources to pay staff, which means that your skills are probably sorely needed by a charity. It looks great on your CV too.
